chicks--never were

Oh, poor Mama Bear--contrary to my friend Maria's assertion, I believe that chickens can and do feel emotion. And Mama Bear is distraught right now. None of her eggs turned out to be actually containing any babies. They are all gracing the compost bin right now. :-( After sitting for 4 weeks now, hoping for babies, I think Sally's assertion--"*I'd* sure be frustrated!" is correct. I would be too. And sad.

Poor thing, I'm sad too.

Wow, I just came off as heartless! I am sure she is the chicken version of sad. :(

Yes, Mama cried on my shoulder yesterday and I held her while she mourned. She told me all about it. And she assured me that she will get over it, though she is still upset now. I think it sure would be nice if the other hens would be a support to her now....but they're just pecking at her whenever she tries to rejoin the group. :-(

Impressive conversation with an animal whose brain is the size of a wet Fava bean

It is impressive, isn't it? I was impressed myself. I don't think that Mama Bear was only being so emotional just to prove you wrong, either!

Poor Mama! Is there any chance she'll be able to brood again in the future?

Yes! Mama Bear goes broody all the time. I don't want to put eggs under her now as she's already sat for a month on them--and it does take a toll on her. Next time she goes broody I'll get some more fertile eggs for her. Thanks for thinking of poor Mama, everyone!
